Talk about "waggin' the dog", this epiphany of Annan's shows that he could give former President Clinton some serious competition in a misdirection test.
After supporting the so-called "Oil for Food" program, and opposing the current war in Iraq, the United Nations Secretary General has gone and lost his mind. The US Justice department, who only has jurisdiction inside the United States, conducted an investigation into the misappropriation of the "Oil for Food" program's funds. They found one US businessman and one from Britain had a hand in the misappropriation. Firstly, allow me to salute the US and British authorities for investigating as the rest of the world is just happy to blame everything on the US. Next, there were most likely thousands of individuals and companies that profited from the program. However, Kofi Annan has taken it upon himself to request the US and Britain pay for the multi-billion dollar boondoggle of his own
At least Mr. Annan accepts the fact that there were misappropriations and people other than the Iraqis benefited. This will not stop him from trying to do the same thing again, but it does point to the fact that he has at least a passing relationship with reality. It's also just great that he can speak in front of the United Nations and demand money from two entire nations based on two individuals. In that case, the war in Iraq must be able to be justified in Kofi's mind, because at least one Iraqi, Saddam Hussein, had violated international law. Why the double standard?
The answer is because the United Nations is modeled after a grade school lunch room, and for Kofi to "win any points" with his peers, he needs to brazenly demand outrageous things from one group to prove to them that he is not a weak-willed sycophant.
Perhaps, Secretary General Annan, should mind the scandal he and his son are embroiled in without firing accusations at entire countries, especially those that make his position possible.
